Our curriculum and the way we teach it, is shaped to support and challenge every child to achieve their best both now and in the future. We are passionate about teaching an ambitious, creative and knowledge-rich curriculum. It is not set in stone but adapts to different learners and fresh ideas.
We know that core skills are pivotal. Our aim is for every child to be fluent in spoken word, reading, writing and number through daily English and maths lessons. Alongside English and maths is a breadth of other subjects, all of which contribute to a well rounded experience that offers something for everyone.
Our Curriculum In Action
Ambitious Knowledge and Skills - Each subject follows a progression model that builds substantive and disciplinary knowledge over time. Long-term maps and knowledge organisers clarify essential content, vocabulary and concepts.
Quality First Teaching - Adaptive teaching ensures that all pupils access the full curriculum. Scaffolding, precise feedback, and formative assessment ensure that SEND and disadvantaged pupils make strong progress.
Whole Child and Culture – Development of the whole child is embedded across subjects ensuring that children work collaboratively, are reflective and develop independence. Pupils learn to demonstrate our four school values of- resilience, respect, kindness and teamwork.
Community and Citizenship - Pupils engage with real-world issues, local partnerships and in roles and responsibilities, this helps them understand their role as active citizens who make a positive difference.
High Aspirations and Outcomes - Teaching routines ensure consistent quality. Frequent formative assessments and responsive planning drive sustained progress.
The Impact Of Our Curriculum
The impact of our curriculum is reflected in both academic achievement and personal development:
Academic Potential - By the end of Key Stage 2, attainment and progress in reading, writing and maths are above national averages. Pupils apply knowledge with depth, accuracy and independence, demonstrating secure disciplinary understanding across subjects.
Personal Potential - Pupils leave Southway confident, articulate and kind. Through experiences in leadership, creativity and in our community, they develop resilience, empathy and curiosity.
Inclusion - Gaps for disadvantaged and SEND pupils are narrowed through targeted support and consistent access to the full curriculum.
Cultural Capital - Pupils experience a broad range of enrichment, from residentials to arts and sports. Technology enhances learning, feedback and accessibility, ensuring all pupils are prepared for the future.
The true impact of our curriculum is seen in the confident, capable and kind learners who leave Southway Junior School ready for their next stage of education, equipped to make a difference.
